During a comprehensive eye examination, Drs. Sowa and Skierczynski look at the back of the eye, where the tiny blood vessels and structures are located. These delicate structures offer the first signs of eye diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration and systemic diseases such as Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) and Multiple Sclerosis.
Sean Skierczynski, O.D.
Dr. Sean Skierczynski came home to Asheville in 2010 after completing Optometry school and a residency in Memphis. He received his bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a graduate of Roberson High School.
Dr. Ski lives with his wife and daughter in the Mills River area.
Michael J. Sowa, O.D.
A native of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Dr. Sowa received his bachelor’s degree in biology from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre and his Doctor of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia.After graduation, he served three years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas. Following his service, Dr. Sowa moved to the Western North Carolina area where he worked in an ophthalmology clinic for seven years specializing in contact lenses. Prior to opening the current practice in the Spring of 2000, he worked for six years as a low vision rehabilitation specialist at Mission Hospitals. He lives with his wife Teresa and son Eric in south Asheville. He is a member of the American Academy of Optometry, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the Mountain District Optometric Society.
